SculpSure is a completely non-invasive, non-surgical fat-reduction treatment available at Shenandoah Women’s Healthcare in Harrisonburg, VA. This revolutionary technology can safely and effectively remove stubborn pockets of fat that have been resistant to diet and exercise. If you’re wondering if you might be a good candidate for this treatment, keep reading to find out more.
The Ideal Candidate for Laser Recontouring
SculpSure is the first FDA-approved laser specifically designed for fat reduction. This life-changing technology is much in demand, but it is not necessarily for everyone. It is important to note that this form of laser fat recontouring is not a magic weight-loss cure! It is intended for people who have localized areas of fat that they have not been able to get rid of, despite their best effort.
The ideal candidate for laser reduction therapy has stubborn fat deposits in the abdomen, inner or outer thigh, buttocks, or upper arms. This is also a great treatment for those of us who have excess fat under the chin, contributing to a “jowly” appearance. Anyone who wishes to achieve a “spot treatment” of these areas should be a good candidate.
Subcutaneous vs. Visceral Fat
When considering this type of fat reduction treatment, you should also be aware of the difference between the two types of fat stored in the body. Subcutaneous fat is more noticeable due to its positioning directly under the skin. Visceral fat, on the other hand, is stored deeper inside the body, usually gathered directly around the vital organs.
Laser fat reduction will only work on subcutaneous fat. The reason for this, of course, is that a laser can only penetrate so deep into the body. Surface fat can be easily accessed and heated by the laser. During your consultation, your doctor will determine if the type of fat you have will be responsive to this treatment.
Who Is Not a Suitable Candidate
As discussed, anyone with significant deposits of visceral fat will not be suitable for this treatment (although they can certainly take advantage of laser therapy to address any areas of subcutaneous fat that they consider problematic). Few people have only one type of fat and not the other.
Likewise, people with significant skin scarring or unhealed wounds in the desired treatment area will not be accepted for treatment, since this form of laser technology is best suited to healthy skin. If you have a temporary skin issue, such as a sunburn or eczema flare-up, your appointment can simply be rescheduled.
You Have Been Accepted for Treatment, Now What?
Once you have gone through your consultation and are comfortable with the treatment plan, we will schedule your first appointment. A laser sculpting session usually takes about 25 minutes, and can even be done on your lunch break. This treatment is performed on an outpatient basis and requires no topical or general anesthesia.
You will feel a tingling sensation as the laser is applied to your skin, with gradual warming as the fat cells are heated up. There will be absolutely no incisions made – the treatment is done entirely through lasers that penetrate the skin, targeting fat cells. There should not be any pain during your session, although you will feel a warming sensation that may be intense at times. This is completely normal and a sign that the laser is working to kill fat cells.
What to Expect After Treatment
You can return to your normal activities right after your appointment, even exercise. The wonderful thing about laser recontouring, compared to traditional liposuction, is that patients are in no discomfort following treatment and there is absolutely no downtime required.
It is important to note that you will not see any noticeable effects right away. You will eventually notice the fat gradually melting away at around the six-week mark, with maximum effects not normally visible until week 12. In some cases, patients wish to schedule a follow-up treatment, but we ask that they wait at least three months so that the full effect of the first treatment has had time to become evident.
Can You Treat More Than One Area at Once?
Yes. Different parts of the body can receive laser treatment at one session. Each treatment area requires about 25 minutes of laser time, so if three areas are being treated, your appointment will be extended to approximately one hour and fifteen minutes. SculpSure can also be combined with other services offered on our spa menu, as long as different parts of the body are being treated.
Are the Effects of SculpSure Permanent?
The laser energy used in this treatment is effectively killing fat cells, meaning that they will be gone for good. Whether you are being treated on the stomach, hips, thighs, or arms, the fat that is targeted during treatment will never be able to come back.
However, if you gain weight in the future, it is possible that you will have a return of stubborn fat deposits in these areas. That is why we always recommend that if you are going to take advantage of this treatment, it is important to also ensure sensible lifestyle choices so that you can keep your new shape for many years to come.
Combining Laser Fat Reduction with Other Treatments
If you are trimming a part of your body, there is always the possibility that some loose skin might be left behind. Sometimes the skin bounces right back on its own, but other times it needs a bit of help. If this is the case, we can discuss some of our skin tightening therapies to help you achieve the overall look you are hoping for.
Any such treatments will be scheduled separately, as you want to give the effects of your SculpSure session plenty of time to take effect. There is no reason why multiple treatments can’t be combined, as long as they are spaced out appropriately at the discretion of your doctor.
The Science Behind Non-Surgical Liposuction
How, exactly, does laser recontouring work? The laser applicators applied to treatment areas emit exactly 1060nm of laser energy, which in turn heats up the subcutaneous tissue to about 45 degrees Celsius. The key is to sustain this elevated temperature for 25 minutes in order to ensure the fat cells are completely neutralized. Of course, not all the fat in this area will be targeted – ideally, about 25-30% of fat cells in a treatment area will be lasered.
As the fat is being heated, the skin is cooled at the same time so that the patient does not feel any skin irritation or discomfort. This simultaneous heating and cooling action allows fat to be killed off without any damage done to the skin.
What Happens After Treatment
You will feel the laser working during your treatment but will not notice the effects for several weeks. This is because the laser causes a process called “apoptosis,” during which the dead fat cells are flushed out through the body’s lymphatic system. It basically turns the fat into a waste product that is naturally expelled from the body.
This is a process that takes several weeks, but you will gradually notice the treatment areas shrinking back as the fat is flushed from the body. Applying some short, light massages to the treated areas once a day can be effective at speeding up the lymphatic drainage process.
After a series of 1 to 3 laser sessions, patients can expect a permanent fat reduction (approximately 25%, or 2-3 cm in treatment areas). Rest assured that these fat cells are gone permanently! We cannot, however, guarantee that new fat cells will not form. A healthy diet and exercise plan is the best way to ensure positive, long-term results.
