Juvederm has become one of the most well-known collections of dermal fillers on the beauty market for its ability to treat the signs of aging quickly and effectively. What was once a single filler is now a whole family of fillers that targets and treats the different signs of aging that show up on the face. At Shenandoah Women’s Healthcare in Harrisonburg, VA, we are proud to offer these fillers as a way to improve both your appearance and your confidence.
Which Juvederm Should You Use for Nasolabial Folds?
One of the reasons why this particular collection has earned a reputation as the “go-to” filler is because of its versatility. This collection has five different filler formulations that treat different areas of the face that have begun to exhibit the signs of aging.
If you want to specifically treat nasolabial folds, three different formulations treat lines and cheeks, one of which may be the best option to treat those bothersome folds that form in the lower half of the face. Which of these three filler formulations is the right one to use is something that will vary from one patient to the next.
Everyone’s face is different and the signs of aging show up differently on faces with different structures. The best way to choose the right formulation for your nasolabial folds is to sit under the expert analysis of one of our injectors and let them help you determine the best treatment plan for your face.
Formulations for Treating Lines
There are two different formulations of this filler that treat facial lines and folds: Juvederm Vollure XC and Juvederm XC. Your nasolabial folds may respond well to one of these formulations if they have developed due to aging, wrinkles, and lines.
The effects of these two formulations are temporary, but the results are immediate. You will see results from your treatment immediately, and those results will last for 12 to 18 months based on the formulation chosen.
The Vollure XC Formulation
This formulation is designed to treat moderate to severe facials folds and wrinkles in the lower half of the face. It can also help treat lines commonly referred to as “parenthesis lines,” which are the lines that form around the mouth and the nose.
Results are immediate and last up to 12 months. The benefit of this entire line of fillers, no matter which formulation you choose, is that all include lidocaine as an ingredient, which provides optimal comfort during injections.
The XC Formulation
This particular formulation also treats wrinkles and folds in the lower half of the face, as well as smile lines and parenthesis lines. Results appear immediately, and can also help the skin appear smoother and free from any lines.
Results last up to 18 months and when you start to notice that those results are beginning to fade, they can be maintained with continuous injections.
Treating the Cheeks
Juvederm Voluma XC is the formulation that works to lift the cheeks and add volume where volume loss has occurred as a result of the aging process.
If your nasolabial folds have formed as a result of sagging cheeks due to gravity and the significant role that it plays in the aging process, this particular formulation may work to resolve your nasolabial folds.
The Voluma XC Formulation
This is the one formulation from the collection that specifically treats the cheek area. When the cheeks lose volume, sagging and flattening occurs, which can contribute to the appearance of your already existing nasolabial folds.
The Voluma XC formulation adds volume to the cheeks, lifts them, and helps contour the entire area. The results of this formulation last up to two years.
Choosing the Right Formulation
While all of these particular formulations may work to improve your nasolabial folds, nothing is absolute until your consultation. During your initial consultation, we will perform a facial analysis to determine which formulation would benefit you the most. Faces age differently and nasolabial folds develop with different degrees of severity. This fact is what makes their treatment differ from one case to the next.
We don’t take injections lightly but instead, administer them with artistic precision so that you get the best results and can obtain your aesthetic goals. Rest assured that there is a Juvederm formulation for you and you will get the results you are looking for; you just want to be sure that you get the right formulation to ensure that your results look as natural as possible.
Consultations Are Important
Injections should be treated as an art form since they are unique to each individual face. During your consultation, we will be able to get a better idea of your goals and help you choose the best Juvederm formulation based on those goals.
How to Prepare for Your Appointment
Once you have your consultation and your appointment has been booked, there are some ways to prepare for your treatment to ensure that you get the best results post-injection. Following this protocol will help you avoid bruising and help enjoy your results as soon as possible without having to worry about treating the surrounding injection area.
Avoid Certain Medications
One week before your appointment, avoid all blood-thinning medications, including both over-the-counter and herbal supplements. Continuing to take these medications up to your appointment could result in bruising, which is why it is important to stop them ahead of time.
You can continue their use once your injection appointment is completed. These medications and supplements include:
- Vitamin E
- St. John’s Wort
- Ginkgo Biloba
- Omega-3 capsules
Provide Us With All of Your Health Information
During your consultation, be sure to provide us with all of the health-related history required. If you have a history of cold sores, also known as Perioral Herpes, let us know in advance.
We will be able to give you information about antiviral therapy that you can take part in prior to your treatment. This will ensure that you are fully prepared for your treatment.
Avoid drinking any alcoholic beverages 24 hours before and after your appointment. Doing so will help you avoid extra bruising in the area of treatment. If you have an event you must attend where alcohol will be involved, be sure to plan your treatment appointment accordingly.
Avoid Certain Topical Products
Certain anti-aging products that should be avoided in the days leading up to your treatment. These topical products include Tretinoin, also commonly known as Retin-A, Glycolic Acid, Alpha Hydroxy Acid, Retinoids, Retinols, or any other anti-aging products with active ingredients. You will be able to resume their use following your treatment.
Following your treatment, there are some simple directives that you must follow to ensure that you maintain the best possible post-injection results.
Hot tubs, hot showers, saunas: if you love them, you’ll need to hold off for a few days before spending time in them again. Heat can cause the blood vessels to dilate, which could lead to unnecessary bruising and bleeding at the injection site.
Avoid the Sun
The sun damages your skin, and it can have a negative effect on your injection sites as well. Now is the time to avoid excess sun exposure.
Wear sunscreen even if you aren’t planning on spending any time in the sun, and limit prolonged periods in the sun. For extra protection, wear a hat or sun visor to ensure that your face is fully protected from the sun’s rays.
Avoid drinking alcohol 24 hours after your treatment. Again, if you know you’ll be at an event where you will be drinking, plan your appointment at a time during the week where you can avoid drinking alcohol 24 hours before and after your treatment.
You don’t have to skip the gym entirely after your treatment, but you do need to avoid any strenuous exercises. Such exercises cause the pulse and blood pressure to increase, which could result in dilation, which could then lead to bleeding and bruising at the injection site.
If you need to move, opt for a very low-intensity form of cardio, such a walking at a leisurely pace.
Due to the way that fillers fill the space between the dermis and the epidermis, you need to avoid any pressure on the area treated for two weeks after your appointment.
This includes facial massages. If you do get a message that doesn’t involve facial massage, make sure that your face doesn’t press down into massage cradles at any point for two weeks post-treatment. Once those two weeks pass, you’re free to get as many facial massages as you’d like.
Things You Can Do
There are some things that you can do after your treatment. You can shower (as long as it’s not a hot shower), and go about your regular daily actives, and even apply makeup immediately after your treatment.
You can also apply ice to the area treated; just be sure to avoid putting pressure on the area when applying ice. Look in the mirror and admire your results. Those nasolabial folds filler that you dreaded seeing each day will be gone immediately after treatment.
When to Schedule Maintenance Appointments
Once you see your results, we know you’ll love them. You may even want to come back to treat some other problem areas as well or enhance your lips with Juvederm Ultra XC, the lip plumping formulation. These dermal fillers are long-lasting, but they’re also temporary. They do have an expiration date and you will need to continue injections in order to maintain your results.
Your results will disappear whenever your body metabolizes the ingredients in the filler. This is why results last longer or shorter amounts of time for two people who received injections on the same day. However, there’s no need to worry.
When you begin to see your results fade and notice that your juvederm nasolabial folds have begun to return, simply contact us and schedule your follow-up treatment so that we can avoid any severe disruption in your results.
