Centering Prenatal Care

An Innovative Approach to Pregnancy Care

At Shenandoah Women’s Healthcare, we believe the best pregnancy outcomes happen when mothers are well-prepared, confident, and empowered. That’s why, when you work with a nurse-midwife, we offer two choices in how you receive prenatal care.

Traditional care consists of regular one-on-one visits with your care providers throughout your pregnancy. Centering Pregnancy is an innovative approach that includes group sessions with other expecting mothers in addition to individual appointments.

We encourage you to keep reading and learn more about Centering Pregnancy to decide if the approach is right for you.

What is Centering Pregnancy?

Centering Pregnancy care at SWHC started in 2009, but it has been widely practiced in many parts of the United States for a long time. Check-ups, support, and education all take place in a group setting with a nurse-midwife.

If you choose to take part in our Centering Pregnancy program, you’ll meet 10 times throughout your pregnancy with a small group of other women with similar due dates, along with a provider and nurse. In each session, you will have private time with your nurse-midwife, before meeting as a group to discuss your experiences, questions, concerns, and solutions.

Group sessions are an opportunity to connect with other expectant moms, share stories, and talk about everything you’re going through both physically and emotionally. Many women even create lasting friendships through group sessions.

Benefits of Centering Pregnancy

When it comes to prenatal care, there’s nothing more important than the health and happiness of you and your baby.

The Centering Pregnancy approach follows the traditional recommendation of 10 prenatal visits, but group sessions offer women extra time with their provider, plus the added benefit of group support. When polled, 96-97% of women said they prefer receiving their prenatal care in a group setting.
