What to Expect

As part of any appointment at Shenandoah Women’s Healthcare, your provider may recommend lab tests as part of the diagnostic process or to determine whether previous treatments are working.

Depending on the labs ordered, results will generally be available within a few days to a week. Once the results are in, our physicians will review the results and make recommendations for further tests, prescribe medications, or simply talk to you about their findings.

The goal of our laboratory tests are to help you and your healthcare team at SWHC make informed decisions about your health and wellbeing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to do anything to prepare for labs?
In most cases no preparation is needed for lab tests. However in some cases you may need to fast before a test in order to obtain accurate results. Your healthcare provider will explain any preparation needed for the labs he or she recommends.

How do you know which labs I need?
At Shenandoah Women’s Healthcare, our providers order only the labs they believe will provide valuable insights into your health. They order labs based on a variety of factors, including your health history, your risk factors for specific diseases, and your age. And of course, our practitioners will listen to you and ask questions about your health and how you’re feeling. Using all of this information, they’ll be able to choose the lab tests you need.

What if I’m afraid of needles?
Many modern tests require a very small amount of blood and use needles that are about as thin as a hair on your head. We can’t guarantee you won’t feel a thing, but our practitioners will work to make you feel as comfortable as possible throughout the entire process. We’ll help you overcome your fear of needles so that you can get the lab results you need.

How long does it take to get results for lab tests?
It depends on the test. Some results may be available in hours, others may take several days. When results are available and have been reviewed, we’ll contact you to discuss the results and our recommended plan of action, which may include further testing, a follow-up appointment, or prescription medications.
