Prenatal Care with your Midwives
Certified Nurse-Midwives are experts at supporting women and families through the normal processes of pregnancy, labor and birth. Because this is such an important time in your life, we strive to understand what will make the experience a positive one for you, and do all we can to help that happen. In 2010, our nurse-midwives were recognized by the American College of Nurse-Midwives as “Best Practice” in the category of highest rate of intact perineums.
When you begin seeing the nurse-midwives for your pregnancy, you will be offered two choices in how you receive prenatal care. Traditional care consists of one-on-one visits with your midwives at regular times in your pregnancy. Centering Pregnancy is an innovative approach to prenatal care associated with improved outcomes for mother and baby — women have private appointments when they need them, but otherwise meet in small groups with other women due in the same month, along with a provider and a nurse. You get more time and education, plus snack and the company of other women and their partners! Some women prefer Traditional Care while others love Centering, and we are proud to offer both option to our clients. Centering is offered both during the day and in the evening for your convenience. We are now accredited by the Centering Health Institute, and are the only accredited program in the Shenandoah Valley.
When it comes to labor, you may have particular hopes or concerns. As your midwives, our first priorities are a healthy mom and a healthy baby. Additionally, we hope to assist you in having the type of birth you want. For some women, this means having the support and encouragement to labor naturally and without pain medication. Others definitely want an epidural or the option to use pain medication. Women who desire VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) have an 74% success rate in our practice. And women who need a repeat c-section often still choose midwifery care because they appreciate the extra time and attention at their prenatal visits.
Having your baby with Certified Nurse-Midwives means you will also have access to the services of our excellent team of physicians, should they be needed. Because we have a collaborative relationship with our physicians and can easily interact with them, we can continue to care for you even if you develop certain complications in pregnancy, such as gestational diabetes, elevated blood pressure, or twins.
We are available to answer questions about care with the Certified Nurse-Midwives, and birth at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, and are happy to have a consultation visit to help determine if we are a good for you. Whether you want to talk about a natural birth, rooming-in and early discharge from the hospital, or an epidural followed by the full support of the hospital nursery (or somewhere in between!), we can help you have a birth that results in a healthy and happy mom and baby.
